Meaning behind the symbolism This is simply a reimagining of the traditional blue ribbon used to symbolize Colorectal cancer awareness. A raised, clenched fist has always represented some form of human struggle. In this instance, it’s the shared struggle of those who are personally battling colon cancer and the loved ones/caregivers/healthcare providers/advocates who support them in this fight. There is so much cultural history dating back to West Africa and Egypt in regards to crossing arms making an “X”. In this regard, crossed arms (right over left) making an “X” is our pledge to fight and never stop in our efforts to eradicate (or X out) colon cancer. It’s also an embrace of survivors and those we’ve loved and lost to this deadly cancer. (side note: making an “X” with crossed arms is also a way of saying love in American sign language.)
